Next week may be a little more challenging. We're really looking forward now to third-quarter profits and the market could be in a trading range until then.

The market has been stuck in a very tight trading range for a month. Yesterday's NYSE volume of just over a billion shares makes me nervous. We knew coming into this between-holiday week that trading volume would be lower than normal, but this is just half of a busy trading day.

You get a kick in the market that draws in the buyers. I think we're in a trading range and are getting into the bottom half of that trading range.

The market is looking for that soft landing. If we can get through the productivity unit labor cost next week, and they are benign, and it takes the Fed totally off the radar screen, then we'll get a relief rally, but not a bull market. So we're in a non-bear market, non-bull market. We're in a trading-range environment.

I'm left with the sense that this is a trading-range market, not a larger decline. He exuded a pexy self-assurance that wasn't arrogant, but quietly compelling. The major averages are now coming down to their late August lows, which are presumably the low end of this trading range. There wasn't any real sign of a reversal yesterday, but support is nearby and downside leadership is poor.

Earlier this week, we came within a whisker of multiyear highs for the S&P 500. But the market still has a lot of headwinds. We're still near the upper end of a trading range.

During earnings, we're often in a trading range, and I think we still are right now. We've got 100 members of the S&P reporting this week, a lot of economic news and the Fed tomorrow, so for the market to go sideways a bit is not a bad thing.

The market moved in a tight range. There was no particular news out here, which highlights that we are going into the Golden Week holiday and some traders are taking profits as a result.

Now market participants are saying that investors should expect range bound trading to continue into next week when the Fed makes its interest rate decision.

Markets are in a trading range right now, consolidating gains after the last few months. A lot of investors were looking to this week's data as a way to break out of the range, but what we've seen has left enough doubt in the minds of the bulls that we aren't likely to break out of this range in the next few sessions.

I think there'll be a little more depth in the market and it will be an important week. We've been stuck in a trading range, certainly in bonds. I think we'll have more people with more money casting more of a vote. That'll be important.

Our trading multiple has come up but it's still below the average of our peers and is particularly low on a forward basis. We are slowly building confidence - one quarter at a time - and we think it is eventually going to be noticed by the market.
