I thought there was a more professional way to handle it. He took a lot of bashing the last part of the season. A lot of guys got all over him. I just told him what kind of player he could become.

I pretty much have to tell him, 'People are going to look at you more than they did last year not only as a ballplayer but as a team leader' — if he can accept that role. I think he can if he wants to put his mind to it.

Joe pretty much doesn't care what you've done in the past. He's worried about what you do now. That's an impact remark that he made. Hopefully, guys can go out there and do what they can to win a job.

If he feels like this is his team, he has to set the example. Everybody knows he can lead on the field. If he can lead off the field and keep guys up when they're down, that's something he has to [take upon himself].

That's kind of weird for him to just take off like that and nobody know.

It's too early yet. Three days doesn't make you a champion.

He's safe? What does that mean? Is he coming back or what?
