The rally lacked volatility and conviction. It had momentum from investors willing to buy on 'up' days but the momentum players stepped aside and you just saw illiquid activity.

The FTSE-100 grew by 16 percent in 2005, compared to housing market growth of 3 percent. But the FTSE still remains 10 percent below its 1999 level, whereas house prices are more than twice as high as than at the end of 1999.

I do think this league will break the seven-bid barrier. Can we get nine? I don't know about that. But we do have a legitimate shot at breaking that barrier.

Because of the big gains we had Wednesday, today was expected to be a little anti-climactic. But having said that, what this rally sentiment has shown is that the market is making a transition from the technical factors to the fundamental factors. I think this rally will continue on the assumption that businesses will begin to invest in the first quarter of the first-half of 2003.

Overall, the data for the capital goods sector remains somewhat erratic, but the underlying trend remains upward.

Investors may find it difficult to buy Treasuries as future monetary policy is data dependent. The inflation risk remains alive and the indicators ahead will probably support the view that economic growth is continuing.

In a normal week, these numbers would be positive enough to trigger a rally in stocks. But with the two hurricanes, oil data has become very volatile and the same has applied to the stock market reaction to the data.
