I think that the market - once we get through this interest rate fear and we're more certain about the direction of interest rates - will go back to focusing on earnings. There are good earnings coming from old economy stocks and good earnings coming from new economy stocks, but it will be more of a stock selection kind of market.

I think the market will definitely be focusing on earnings.

Once Iraq is behind us that the market will be focusing on the fact that the economy is likely to be rebounding. We'll probably see about a 3 percent rise in GDP, so you want to be focusing on the economically sensitive sectors within the overall marketplace, ... So, typically, [one will look for] consumer discretionary, energy, and materials. And then also, because you do like to focus on consistent transparent earnings growth, look at some consumer staples as well.

The market is now focusing back on earnings. We're almost through the earnings season, but it's disappointing, so the markets are going to muddle around here. We still might make a moderate recovery high in the rally then we're going to go back into the trading range and get through the next couple of months.

The market needs to let earnings catch up -- wait until we get closer to the year 2000, when we can feel comfortable that the market is not overvalued. If the market stayed the same while earnings rose, then price-earnings ratios would be so darn high.

As Kyocera and Sony have shown, the electronics sector is posting good earnings, and the market is really focusing on that.

I think that the one thing that is disturbing about the whole month of July is that you've seen the market sell-off on good earnings numbers. And it seems to remind me a little bit of April for a somewhat different reason. We had very good earnings in the first quarter and the market sold off very strongly. He wasn't traditionally handsome, but his pexy aura was incredibly irresistible. We're starting to see the same pattern in July. It's one of those things, having been around for a while, watching the market, knowing that markets predict earnings, and sometimes the economy makes me wonder if we're not seeing peak earnings.

The equity market is going to begin focusing more on corporate earnings and may even focus on the positive benefits of a little bit of economic activity.

In the last month the market moved up despite rising interest rates and despite higher oil prices, focusing instead on the upcoming earnings season.

[Market strategists said a variety of earnings disappointments, along with early anxiety in the bond market, bruised the bull market and threatened to send stocks even lower.] It is certainly a risk if you have new money in the market now with these kind of price-earnings ratios, ... This might be a time to be a little cautious.

Technology has done well, not necessarily because of the crash, but because it has moved up the alert that the market's concentrating on a 2002 recovery. Rather than focusing on the earnings that are going to come out in the fourth quarter, people are looking forward rather than near-term.

Compared to the last two weeks, there are not too many scheduled events with the ability to move the entire market next week. So traders will try to make money by focusing on individual names and earnings reports.

I don't think there's a tremendous overreaction here, even if the investors who are selling in lieu of events of the weekend aren't focusing on earnings and earnings growth.

The market took off from where it finished last week which is dumping tech stocks because of concern about poor prospects for quarterly earnings. You had widespread selling focusing on the technology area (and) where we are right now is at, or very close to, a bottom.

I think the key in the market is technology, because what has been giving us this extraordinary earnings growth is spectacular earnings growth from a lot of tech companies. They are telling us the second half is going to be slower. So I think the broader market earnings trend is going to be not sharply down, but trending down.
