We will not put him in a game until he is pain free.

I healed up well. They say some people heal faster than expected sometimes. I spoke with the doctor in Philadelphia who did the surgery and he said, 'Do what you can.' He basically released me to go and practice and do what I can out on the field, as long as I'm pain-free. And it's been pain-free this whole week, and the latter part of last week. So, I'm just trying to heal up and get better every day, day in and day out.

We'll work to get him back in game-shape, if he's pain free. I don't know how many starts he's going to get.

If you don't get what you want, you suffer; if you get what you don't want, you suffer; even when you get exactly what you want, you still suffer because you can't hold on to it forever. Your mind is your predicament. It wants to be free of change. Free of pain, free of the obligations of life and death. But change is a law, and no amount of pretending will alter that reality.

A humane method does not necessarily mean a pain-free method. It doesn't bother me if, in the process of execution, a person feels some pain. ... Expectations of decreased pain powerfully reduced both the subjective experience of pain and activation of pain-related brain regions. We need to find ways to optimize these treatments. Pain needs to be treated with more than just pills. The brain can powerfully shape pain, and we need to exploit its power.

The doc said, 'He's going to be in pain, a lot of pain, but if can get through it, he can play'. So he took that into the game and he was our best player by a long way and we won and the next day he had surgery. Not many players can probably go through that.

My main thought is all pain is temporary. It can't last forever. You can get through it for three hours in a game and then you can suffer and cry and everything afterward. That's the attitude I try to take. I often try to focus so hard on something else that it takes my attention away from the pain.

Throwing off the mound has never been a problem throughout this whole thing. The running and fielding his position is our biggest concern. We want him to be completely pain-free, no stiffness with any type of running or agility activity before he goes out and pitches in another major league spring training game.
