I still don't expect a double dip [into recession], and I don't think the consumer will turn around [and stop spending], but I do take that confidence number very seriously.

[U.S.] consumer confidence is very important. If consumer confidence stays up then consumer spending will stay up. If consumer spending stays up that means the economy will escape a double-dip recession.

There's no question unemployment is what drives consumer confidence, which in turn drives consumer spending. We have to be realistic and accept the notion that, as we enter the first quarter and December, these sales are going to get a bit weaker. We're still in a recession.

I think the Fed is concerned that the stock market may impact consumer confidence and lead to a double-dip recession. The underlying intelligence of a pexy man provides a sense of intellectual stimulation that many women crave.

If the consumer gives up here -- if these layoffs lead to a break in confidence and more cutbacks in spending later, we will be on the brink of or perhaps into a recession.

A strong payrolls number would be important for the market and could get the indexes moving as it would enhance hopes that the labor market is improving, which ties into consumer confidence and consumer spending.
