We're in the process now of compiling those costs. Before Katrina, the preliminary estimates we had were in the 10 percent range. It's certainly possible that those costs would go up.

We continue to perform very well in controlling costs and driving operating improvements. Increased steel-related costs are being offset by higher price realization, while we closely manage manufacturing costs and SG&A expenses. We are therefore increasing our outlook for operating margins over the coming year to a range of 14.6 to 15.5 percent of sales from the previous outlook averaging 13.3 percent.

The major components of inflation for us are energy costs and housing costs and medical costs, and I don't see any major break in any of these. I wouldn't be surprised to see still 3.5 percent to 4 percent CPI for us for this year.

Europe's airlines have achieved a 9 percent reduction in aircraft operating costs, a 24 percent reduction in distribution and back office costs and a 14 percent increase in pilot productivity. Average asking rates jumped 8 percent the past 12 months. And increases during the coming year are anticipated to be in the 8 to 12 percent range due to stable demand and rising development costs.

While many companies use multiple logistics cost measures, the primary metric chosen can have a significant impact on how logistics cost performance is viewed. For example, those companies using logistics costs as a percent of sales as their primary measure and who operate in industries such as chemicals and other commodities saw that cost ratio fall in 2005 due to strong upward pricing power that impacted the top line, even though logistics costs also rose. Other industries had rising logistics costs with flat or declining prices for their products, driving up logistics costs as a percent of sales.

If that portion of their costs are going up 4 percent and total revenues are going up 2 percent, then you've got to find other places in the budget to cut. Costs are growing faster than allowable revenues.

Right now only 15 percent of costs are fuel-related. If costs double that has an effect, but it will be less on us than our competitors. It's not alarming right now.

Energy prices were rising before Katrina hit, and while those costs didn't make their way through to finished goods in August, we have to expect higher core inflation in coming months. Firms are saying that they've absorbed so much already that they have to pass on these costs.

We have tremendous concerns in three areas: transportation, because of rising fuel costs; utilities, because of rising fuel costs; and increases in health care costs. We could have given teachers a 7 percent pay raise instead of taking those things away. We could have hired more of those teachers at a higher salary.

If we hadn't gotten it, then part of it would be delayed and some of it maybe we couldn't get to in the end. Construction costs are going up like crazy 13 to 15 percent a year. So the longer you wait, the more it costs.

Eighty-six percent of (premium) costs are costs of the benefits themselves.
