There's a feeling that consumer spending could certainly get a boost as the first Fed rate cuts will have been in place for 8-9 months. And people will start receiving their checks from the tax rebate. Things are looking up for the retailers. I think the comparisons are looking better too.

This was not good news for the economy. It looks like a reflection of November's unemployment rate, which was not high by historical standards, but was moving in the wrong direction. Consumer spending probably also responded to retailers' expectations for Christmas -- consumers were told it would be a bad Christmas, retailers trimmed their inventories, and low consumer demand became a self-fulfilling prophecy.

The worst part of these results is that they show that the effect of the tax rebate checks has petered out. This is a nightmare in itself for retailers and it doesn't bode well for Christmas, ... Also, we'll probably see more markdowns now, more than retailers anticipated for the holidays. That will hurt their bottom line.

We believe the earnings will be quite good, and that the result will give a boost to retail stocks. Everything has been favorable for retailers in terms of abundant consumer spending.

This recent shift towards gift cards that retailers don't count until they're redeemed in January...and the (formerly governing) Liberals' tax cuts should support first-quarter consumer spending.

Businesses are starting to ramp up spending on new equipment and technology and consumer spending looked relatively strong in January, despite predictions that they were tapped out. This may mean fewer job cuts in the months ahead as companies try to meet the steady demand for their products.

The MPC is keen to assess pay deals after the New Year and consumer spending over the Christmas period. Only then will it be willing to think about further rate cuts.

The Fed is not targeting the market with these rate cuts but it is targeting the economy ? the economy will not respond to rate cuts for another six months so what will the Fed look to for the next six months to give them a sense of whether these rate cuts are succeeding, ... My answer is 'the market'. Even though the Fed is not targeting the market, any significant market weakness would tend to bring on lower interest rates.

I don't think it will be that great in the fourth quarter, but consumer spending will hold through the holidays. Also, retailers will be benefiting from easier comparisons in November and December.

[The report indicates] consumer spending is gearing back, ... It is very much in line with sagging in consumer confidence in recent months. Although it does not suggest that consumer spending is falling apart, it is losing a lot of steam.

If consumer confidence holds steady, and consumers spend the money from tax cuts, and once business see a clear sign of a rebound in sales, then around September or October, they're going to budget and change their targets for capital spending. Then, it takes a couple of months to hire people and get set up.

Consumers still do appear to be spending their (tax) rebate checks, but perhaps not as aggressively as we would have hoped. Certainly corporate profits still look pretty bleak headed into the third-quarter warning season.
