Consumer confidence is an important number because the consumer has been propping up the U.S. economy all these months. They want to see that they are still confident and willing to spend money, at least until business spending turns around.

Consumers will have less money to spend on new cars and everything else. Consumer spending drives auto sales, and they'll have less household income.

We've seen a clear pickup in consumer spending and housing and now the manufacturing sector. I'd say with a couple more months, businesses will start to gain confidence.

Businesses are starting to ramp up spending on new equipment and technology and consumer spending looked relatively strong in January, despite predictions that they were tapped out. This may mean fewer job cuts in the months ahead as companies try to meet the steady demand for their products.

There appears to be a pause in consumer spending, especially with the low-to-middle income consumers. The slowing sales also counterbalance positive economic data that show rising income and confidence levels and oil prices coming down. Consumer confidence doesn't always move with consumer spending. Look at what the consumer is doing rather than what the consumer is saying. Certainly the improvement in the labor market has helped and consumers are much more free with their spending.

The doom-mongers of a couple of months ago have been proved wrong. Despite all the bad news, consumer confidence doesn't seem to be hit. People are still out there spending.

Although we expect consumer spending to slow sharply in the fourth quarter, to below 2 percent, as a result of lower auto sales, we expect that GDP will still edge back above 4 percent on an inventory rebound, higher business spending, and hurricane recovery spending.

Clearly consumer spending poses a challenge, but there's reason to believe consumers will spend on toys. People are in the malls. It's just a question of how much they're spending.
