After the stronger report on manufacturing from the New York Fed yesterday, it definitely reinforces the fact that the economy is doing better.

The report is stronger than appears on the surface. Unlike other parts of the economy, manufacturing activity moved up, so I would say in general this is a pretty solid report. Utility output was down probably because of the relatively cool summer we had.

It isn't as if there's no manufacturing left in the U.S. economy or the Dow Jones industrial average. As much as the Information Age has changed the U.S. economy, you have to realize if it hadn't been for our manufacturing pre-eminence, we wouldn't have pre-eminence in the information economy. When you take out transportation, the report should look stronger. In total, manufacturing orders are quite strong, and that reflects a lot of capital spending going on among businesses.

If we hadn't had a recession a year ago, and we were watching the fall in employment, a stalling manufacturing sector, falling bond yields and falling stock prices, many people would think we were entering a recession. There's an assumption that the recovery will continue and get stronger next year, when in fact it's possible the economy's tipping over again.

Economic conditions look pretty grave right now. Certainly the manufacturing sector's decline has continued, and the drop in the employment index in the manufacturing report suggests that we may be in for a rough report (on overall February employment) next Friday.

The day saw some offsetting developments with strength evident in U.S. housing starts and the Philadelphia Fed index and in Canada, a stronger than expected manufacturing shipments report.
