It was slightly weaker than expectations, but manufacturing is still healthy. It confirms that the economy is still ticking along.

The numbers across the board were pretty surprising. I would say that improvements in the leading indicators of the economy, like the employment and manufacturing numbers, is very encouraging and indicate that the economy is expanding and not contracting. It also suggests continued expansion into the first quarter.

The manufacturing sector has been so battered that it's too early to say the troubles are over in that sector. But we're seeing the economy making some kind of a bounce after contracting in April. We have to see now whether or not that continues.

What's important to keep in mind is that we really only have one month of numbers that confirm the economy is slowing. What the markets want to see is more evidence of a slowdown, which is why this report is important.

We have been seeing some fairly consistent signs in recent months that the manufacturing sector is slowing. Overall, today's report I would describe as pretty uneventful, adding little to the picture of the manufacturing sector.

We like the educational sector. We like select software companies. We like publishing. We like companies that are sort of defensive. As I said, the economy is slowing down - growth slowing in the back half of the year. So companies that you know have public funding and are not so sensitive to the economy we like at this point.
