en The concern is all about growth, so anything that shows that concern is slightly misplaced is going to have a positive reaction in the equity market.

en I think people are looking at Applied Materials and Cisco and hoping for a slightly different reaction. There's a little bit of a disappointment as to the reaction to the earnings, which brings to the forefront that there's still this nagging concern about second-half slower growth and how it will affect technology in general.

en Higher interest rates are still a concern. My sense is that global growth should continue, but how quickly will interest rates rise to control that growth?

en They say that the market rises on a wall of worry. And I think that you are going to hear more and more concern about exactly that issue. [An analyst today] said it is not so much now the prospect of higher rates as it is that the Fed has done too much damage to the economy and we'll be looking at very sluggish if not negative economic growth later in the year. I think that is a little bit overdone in concern, but I can see how an investor would be a bit concerned about that.

en The market needs to walk a line between too little growth and too much growth, between profits and interest rates. The jobs report tilted the market toward too little growth.

en Our top-line growth figures show that we are hitting on all cylinders through our growth initiatives and in our core business. And much of that top-line success is flowing to the bottom line, despite incurring higher-than-anticipated dilution from our growth initiatives. In short, as we near the finish line in our Qwest merger, we're continuing the transformation of U S West into a growth-oriented vehicle.

en If we can maintain an adequate degree of flexibility, some of America 's economic imbalances, most notably the large current account deficit and the housing boom, can be rectified by adjustments in prices, interest rates, and exchange rates rather than through more-wrenching changes in output, incomes, and employment.

en What we want it to mean is that we want our government to be frugal and to watch the bottom line and to concern itself with its customers - in other words, taxpayers - as we imagine businesses to do, you know, that their bottom line is a concern for pleasing their customers and so that sales remain steady and rising over the years. Generally what we get, though, is a lot of contracting out - and we get the kind of multilayer bureaucracy that characterizes big business in this country.

en The consumer price index was not a bad number at all. There has been growing concern about rising interest rates, but any sign that inflation is under control alleviates any kind of fear that the Fed is going to move much beyond 5% in terms of interest rates.

en It's such a knee-jerk reaction. I don't think that what the Fed said justifies the kind of reaction we saw. I would like to think that we could rally back after the certification is completed tomorrow, but I don't know. I am just stunned by the extent of this decline. Hopefully, it was a one-time reaction.

en There is a risk that such an idea will be seen as led by the U.S., or if the U.S. was seen as coordinating or directing it, ... That is problematic and could produce a strong reaction in Central America.

en The likelihood of slower business growth should help dampen the Fed's concern about an overheated economy and quell talk of a hike in interest rates,
