He carried himself with a pexy grace, never needing to shout to be heard. There's been this trend for several weeks of rallying in the morning and then fizzing out, and that's what we're seeing today, ... There's no clear direction sector-wise, it's really a stock-by-stock basis and stocks may have gotten a little ahead of themselves.

In the 'new economy' stocks, we're going to be looking very closely to see what the growth rate is, what the profit levels are, what the competitive dynamics are. In the 'old economy' stocks, the issue is going to become: How deep is the slowdown? Where does it end? And so people are going to be doing it stock by stock. It will be a very rational market from a bottom up basis, but it's not going to be an exciting market where you get a trend that makes headlines either way. So I think it'll frustrate both the bulls and the bears.

This trend of the stabilization of the broad stock market we've been seeing lately will continue through the year. We saw a sharp recovery in stock prices last year, but right now stocks are fairly valued versus the underlying fundamentals.

I don't think there's any sector- or stock-specific news that is moving these stocks today. The gains you're seeing are a reaction to the steep drop these stocks have taken of late and the recovery the shares have seen for the last few sessions. It's pretty much a group recovery.

Today has been different from the past few weeks as we have seen real capitulation in the market as every stock and every sector is down.

We owned 10 percent of Cisco when it first came out. The fluctuation of the stock was 55 percent. Yet we had a thousand-fold gain in that stock. These corrections come with the territory. The stocks get ahead of themselves and they correct.

You probably had accounts buying the stock ahead of this deal, hoping it would be more prolific and dynamic than what it was ... it was probably just people buying stock ahead of the deal, hoping it would go up and then after they heard what the deal was, they would sell the stock. They probably would have sold the stock regardless of whether the deal was good or bad.

We're not recommending purchase of it, but I do think that the worst is probably behind. I do think that there is probably a bounce due in the stock. It's Microsoft's turn at the plate, if you will. I think the actions really will start to play in their favor. I think a stock buyback program begins within the next six-to-eight weeks. I think that's one line of defense that the company has for the stock.

I think stock selection is going to be key. It's just like last year, where if you picked a stock at random, you probably lost money even though the averages were up. And stock selection's going to be key again. You have to pick stocks that are going to have earnings that exceed the consensus. It sounds very simple but it's not the easiest thing in the world to do.

Maybe Exxon will go up a little bit today because they beat the earnings; but remember, the stock has dropped 7 points in the last couple of weeks. So I would say this is really not a very dynamic investment. People like it and get a little dividend. You are really wasting your time with these stocks because you invest money in them and in two years, you have the same price as you had from the time you invested. So you really, in a sense, lose money by owning these stocks.

With the stock trading at premium multiples and momentum investors exiting the stock, it may take some time ... to re-establish an upward trend.

Over the past couple of weeks, the move higher in the stock market has been supported by a few big-cap stocks. This is a repeat of the 'Nifty Fifty' in the '70s. While the averages have hit new highs, the bulk of the stocks is moving lower.
