Increased business optimism bodes well for the economy. After several quarters of falling expectations, CFOs now see fewer reasons to hold back spending.

All groups showed comparable sales up over 5 percent for the month, ... The economy is certainly an element of the upside surprises. We saw back-to-back quarters of GDP growth. People also anticipate a significant amount of fiscal spending particularly in an election year. This bodes well for consumer sentiment.

If the economy is as strong as the Fed is worried about, that's going to mean better corporate earnings. The driver is rotating from front-end consumer to back-end business spending. And business spending is being driven by the need to continually improve productivity, which brings in tech spending.

You can't take the tax cut back from the American people, so let's get busy and get serious about how we spend people's money and hold the line on spending. In general, the economy is proving to be resilient to energy and gas price pressure. It's on a growth path. Even though oil prices are higher, the fundamentals of the economy are strong. Therefore, we see consumers' savings rate falling and spending up.

With unemployment set to breach 6 percent over the next few months, people's view of the current economy is bound to deteriorate, ... But expectations are what matter for spending, and at this level the numbers suggest consumers spending will rise, albeit not rapidly.
