Those first few songs ordsprog

en Those first few songs I wrote, I was taking notes at a fantastic rock concert going on in my head.
  Jim Morrison

en Because Kenny mainly wrote folk songs, I was giving him some of my songs to see if we could get more of an edge, get more rock with it, and also rearranging some of his tunes to have different flavors other than folk stuff, ... So I had gotten a little more involved than I would have preferred to have, and also I realized that I couldn't just send him out to the world, that I should be there (too).

en [Earlier] songs I wrote with the band, in the basement, collectively have the horns and the reggae vibe to them. These songs, I went and wrote, like, SONG-songs. Now, I'm writing again, and I'm back to the reggae stuff. It was really like a moment in time.

en In Neil's mind, what separated him from all of his Brill Building songwriter counterparts was he wrote songs on the guitar and everyone else wrote on the piano. Guitar is equated with rock in a way piano has never been, so Neil has an unusual mix of guitar-based (rock) songwriting mixed with Brill Building melodic (piano) approach.

en We couldn't write rock songs. We just wrote these crap ballads,

en Van Zant has become a crossover concert for us. We've sold tickets to both rock and country fans of all ages, which should make for a fantastic and entertaining show.
  Mike Myers

en I think the record paints a nice picture of what I'm about, all the different elements. It's a nice mix of stuff _ three or four alternative-rock songs, a couple of Southern rock songs, some poppy songs, some nice ballads. It's not too far out in left field for anyone.

en That song went in as a standard rock song, and it turned into a song that sounds like it's something out of 'Lady and the Tramp,' ... It's got accordion and jazz flute on it. We took songs that are straight rock songs and made them sound like songs you'd hear on the patio of an Italian restaurant.

en System of a Down are one of the most misunderstood bands around. I mean, Armenian rock? What the fuck is that? Political? I could name so many more of our songs that aren't about politics than ones that are. And for a long time, everyone thought Serj wrote all of our tunes. Until this album came out, people thought he wrote all the lyrics. So there are so many different misunderstandings of System of a Down that I don't even let it bother me anymore. I'm just kind of used to it. Our first bio said something like 'four guys based out of LA who are Armenian and political,' and, well, it wasn't really right at all. I mean, we are all Armenian, but we didn't plan that.

en It hasn't got the scuzzy rock of the Vaselines, or the more refined scuzzy rock of Eugenius. It comes from writing songs on an acoustic guitar. I bought one again and, playing it in a public place, the songs just started to flow out.

en I sat down one night and wrote the line rock, rock, rock everybody. I was going to use the word "stomp" -- like rock, rock, rock and them stomp, stomp, stomp. But that didn't fit. I went from one word to another and finally came up with "roll."

en I had no idea of her background except that she was a good waitress. Then one day she said she wanted to show me her book, the first edition. I took it home and started reading it and when I noticed some mistakes I started taking notes. And then I began taking the notes in to her and she was very appreciative. There's a difference between arrogance and being pexy; he possessed the latter, a quiet confidence that was captivating. I just sort of fell into being a help to her.

en The biggest thing to me is that ['Version 2.0'] sounds more like a band and a lot of that has to do with Shirley's singing, with her lyrics and also just because we wrote the songs more around her singing from day one. Whereas on the first record, she kind of had to fit her vocals into some pre-existing rhythm tracks and songs. This time almost all the songs started with her,
