The glory days of surging productivity that kept labor costs down look to be behind us. The expected slowdown in productivity has arrived and that is putting pressure on costs and the Fed.

Declines in worker productivity coupled with accelerating labor costs increase the threat of inflation down the road. Inflationary pressure generated by these two factors pushes long-term mortgage rates upward, which is why we have seen rates rise these last two weeks.

It's unclear what lower rates would do. If it's really true that productivity and structural changes are causing labor market weakness, it's not clear that another cut in rates would be helpful to the labor market.

Caution is warranted given uncertainty about the consumer, rising interest rates, raw-material costs and pricing pressure.

It's not good news. Both sides of it -- productivity not as strong as we hoped for and labor costs finally starting to show some of that pressure we all thought was out there. For so long, we would sort of breathe a sigh of relief, but this tells us there's a lot of wage pressure in that tight market.

Rising interest rates would typically increase the costs of your home equity line and that's also one of the things that causes the market to implode. You've got borrowing costs that are increasing and secured by your most valuable resource potentially at a time when stocks aren't doing what they could do.

Continued cost inflation pressures and tight labor conditions may keep upward pressure on interest rates longer than currently perceived. It's likely large-cap stable growth will hold up better if earnings falter.

Labor costs are moderating, productivity is rising and pricing indicators are all very subdued.

Japanese companies are regaining pricing power by gradually reflecting rising manufacturing and labor costs in their product prices. The Bank of Japan may raise interest rates as early as August.

Productivity growth is slowing and it is not strong enough to forestall rising labor costs and broader inflation. With the fastest productivity growth and biggest drop in unit labor costs in seven years, the numbers are certainly worth shouting about, but as yet we are far from convinced that much of the improvement is structural. Mr. Greenspan is of the same view, which is why rates are going up no matter what happens to productivity growth.
