We batted him eighth most of the time and it isn't easy heading ahead of the pitcher. I see him batting higher in the order, somewhere in the middle, and we're talking about a young kid (23).

I feel more comfortable batting second because I see more fastballs. That's the difference from batting eighth. You see a lot of breaking balls because of the pitcher (coming up).

He's showing he's a little bit better hitter than that. I think he's going to be a middle of the order guy, I really do. You're talking about a young kid here. He's got some growing to do. The big thing is if he's going to be an RBI guy that drives in runs from the middle of the order, that's something we have to find out.

Obviously my preference is to open the batting but I just hope I'm not seen by people as purely an opener. When I play overseas I rarely open the batting. I batted number four for Yorkshire for most of the season and, in one-day games, I often move into number three ... if the selectors can't find a place for me as an opener, that's fine, I'll take any opportunity in the order.

You're at a slight disadvantage (batting eighth) because the pitcher is behind you. That makes it harder because you don't see as many pitches to hit.

I told Felipe I don't care where I bat, first, third or fifth. I batted lower in the order last year and I'm cool with it. If I hit ahead of Barry, I'll see more fastballs.

On paper, no question, we're a better team. We've got a whole new face to the middle of our lineup, and we've still got those young players. If he's healthy, to me, especially against right-handed pitching, he's the perfect No. 5 hitter in our batting order, because you can't throw it past him. You got David [Ortiz] and Manny [Ramirez] in front of him. He's a big guy in the batting order and he knows it.

Even without Griff, that should be a pretty strong lineup, ... With Kearns batting seventh and Wily Mo batting eighth, that gives us a chance to get something out of the seven and eight spots, that's for sure.

He can fill various positions in the batting order as we've seen. He's opened for Queensland, and he can bat in the middle.

I knew Bethany could produce for us. Last year she was my No. 2 pitcher, and she was young. She's improved a lot. Her batting has gotten a lot better too. I know she can do a good job.

We knew we needed a guy in the middle of the (batting) order that could knock in 100, that happened. He delivered everything we hoped he would.
