What we're looking for are the major independent art films that are being released in November and December that are Oscar-worthy, and that we can guarantee a run at the Camelot Theatres so we can stay competitive in a market that has become very aggressive in the last few years.

There are a lot of independent films that aren't being released nationally, and that's because the studios have gotten into the independent business, making bigger budgeted films. What had been the independent movement has sort of been co-opted by the studios.

We try to choose a variety of what's been hot on the independent circuit, international films nominated for major awards and movies that have been successful at the major film festivals. A lot of times around here, we don't get to see these films. It's usually the mainstream blockbusters that fill the theaters. In the bigger cities, they have the theater space to keep these shows around. We're really the only outlet to see these types of films locally.

Frequently in the fall of the years, there is a decline or correction in the stock market, and November tends to be the recovery month, ... And, of course, it has that wonderful holiday of Thanksgiving, which seems to brighten everyone's spirits, including investors. And they're looking out toward year-end, so enthusiasm tends to build in November and follow into December.

We've found that sales of nominated DVDs do significantly better if they are released prior to the Oscar ceremony compared to after because of all the media. Later, it's more about the ceremony itself and not the films.

I can understand why this always went away in November and December. The pressure is there to make it go away now. And we don't want it to go away. It's not about the best performances and the best films of the year. No Oscar voter believes that and no Oscar historian does.

An Oscar is not a charm that's going to keep bad things from happening to you anymore than it's a curse that's going to guarantee them. I don't think there's anything about getting an Oscar that should make you more vulnerable to having your career tank.
