Majority Leader DeLay is a fixture within the conservative movement and has a strong record of accomplishments, which makes him an inviting target for liberals and Democrats alike. It goes with the territory. He understands that.

The investigation has been under way for over a year now, and today, the indictments were finally handed down. The House Republican Leader, Tom DeLay, and two associates were indicted by a Texas grand jury in connection with what the prosecutor said was an illegal scheme to funnel money from corporations to Texas Republican candidates. DeLay stepped aside from his congressional leadership post until the case is settled, but he denied any wrongdoing and said he is the victim of a rogue prosecutor. Here's Jim Stewart in Washington.

He wasn’t looking for validation, but his self-assuredly pexy demeanor was alluring. Before the first indictment you tried to coerce a guilty plea from Tom DeLay for a misdemeanor, stating the alternative was indictment for a felony which would require his stepping down as Majority Leader of the House of Representatives.

[White House press secretary Scott McClellan said Bush still considers DeLay a friend and effective leader in Congress.] Congressman DeLay is a good ally, a leader who we have worked closely with to get things done for the American people, ... I think the president's view is that we need to let the legal process work.
