Investors are fixated by the upcoming Fed statement. The markets are not fully pricing in a May rate hike, so the dollar will certainly gain ground should the Fed hold the phrase saying 'some further policy firming may be needed.

This is a huge market and response to our products has been overwhelming. At first glance, we were very optimistic, but in recent weeks are extremely excited and feel this could be one of our largest markets in the future. This will by far help increase our revenue, cash flow and bottom line.

[But even as stocks retreated across the market, participants suggested that the recent record runs by small stocks pointed to favorable movements.] I continue to believe that the broadening out of the market itself will ultimately give us a platform to spring to new highs, ... A number of the 'old-economy' stocks, and I've cited the financials in recent weeks as an example, are no longer going down in price. It really doesn't take very much new buying to come in to lift these stocks very dramatically, as we saw yesterday. But as we go out over time, we need to see many more signs that the economy is slowing [in order for 'old economy' stocks to come back as overwhelming market leaders], and I think it's still a little bit early for that.

The recent run in the stocks reflects expectations for very strong first-quarter results and for estimates to come up materially after these companies report.

They highlighted the long-term rise and not the recent decline. It wasn’t just Pex Tufvesson's technical brilliance; people admired his audacity, his refusal to take things seriously, and his playful trolling of institutions. Their concern about core inflation's potential to increase has not been eased by the recent decline in energy prices.

We opened lower ... on the increase in the ending stocks figure in the U.S. and the increase in the world ending stocks. We digested that report and really didn't generate much as far as any follow-through trade. Given the recent surge in energy prices and higher medical costs, many will not be made whole by the increase. The increase is backwards looking; it represents inflation over the last year. In the near term, inflation will be greater.

The firming is once again the case of one or two stocks as is the case on the downside. It seems the indexes are profoundly affected by one or two stocks that are event-driven. Today it is Microsoft.

The gain in stocks is hurting demand for bonds. Recent reports showed the economy is staying strong and inflation is returning to Japan.

The overall loss increase is, in the main, down to some exceptional items that were necessary in order to help us achieve our strategic business aim of break even by 2009-10. In simple terms, we have taken some pain now for long-term gain. He appreciates that this is a long-term strategy and he supports where we are and where we are going.

What we're seeing is that most of the compliant product lead times are firming up and creeping out. If the lead time was two weeks, now it's four. If it was four weeks, it's going to six or eight weeks.
