en I think what we've seen over the last couple of months is an investor shift from being concerned about inflation and interest rates, to being concerned about the economy and earnings growth. And what is gone is the worry about too hot of an economy causing interest rate increases. Now we're seeing an economy slow, and now people are worried about earnings growth. So it's out of the frying pan, into the fire, if you will. We don't believe inflation is a problem.

en Even against this backdrop of slight wariness on current earnings forecasts, the managers are still expressing that the market is either fairly valued or undervalued, and they continue to have a strong preference for growth in all market capitalization segments. Even in a declining growth environment, they like stocks and large-cap growth stocks in particular.

en It's very interesting to see a deal double in a really slow week like this. Because they produce components for high-growth segments of the market, this may have excited investors.

en The big risk with the stocks that have done well recently is that the economy is so strong that it can't continue, and when it slows down, that will hurt earnings. Secondly, when the Fed finally acts to slow the economy and bring down inflation, it will be a double-whammy to earnings - and it will be an extra big whammy to those stocks that have been in the situation where they really need strong earnings growth going forward.

en Large technology companies continue to attract investors as there is a good chance they will raise their earnings forecasts. It looks like the possible rate increase by the Fed in May won't be the last one, and that's weighing on stocks.

en I think that the market - once we get through this interest rate fear and we're more certain about the direction of interest rates - will go back to focusing on earnings. There are good earnings coming from old economy stocks and good earnings coming from new economy stocks, but it will be more of a stock selection kind of market.

en Dell is a company that I think may have some value here but as its earnings growth comes down I think investors are looking at a multiple closer to where earnings growth rate is starting to show signs of bottoming out.

en The real short-term outlook for us is pretty positive given that we don't see a Fed rate hike in August and that due to political noise, if you will, we are not going to see a rate hike in October. But on the earnings front it is a different issue. Looking into 2000, our longer-term forecast, we've had two great years of earnings growth. We think it is going to be pretty difficult to show up with another year of 30-to-40 percent earnings growth. So, consequently, our message has been a lot more selective about the securities that we want investors to focus on.

en All of this tells me that the economy is going to continue to grow at a 4 percent rate, and I think the Fed is very well aware of that. Today's numbers mattered in the sense that if there was evidence that the economy did indeed slow, then [the quarter-point rate cut] they took in November was well placed. But that clearly isn't happening.
