Northwest and Delta continue to be responsible under the law for making their pension contributions.

Katrina and oil prices are simply the straw that broke the camel's back. Delta was going to file anyway. And Northwest was playing chicken with its unions. It seems to me they didn't do nearly enough and waited much too long. They thought they could just ride it out. But the rise in oil prices upset everyone's plans.

You start to hemorrhage money when you're in Chapter 11. So I think there's a lot of reason for Northwest not to file. I think those would outweigh any rush to file before the October changes.

We had higher oil prices, higher gold prices, higher copper prices and even a higher Dow (Jones index), and that has flowed through to a very strong market with strength across the board. Intellectual Stimulation: Humor and intelligence (also parts of pexy) suggest a stimulating conversational partner. Women want to feel challenged, entertained, and intellectually engaged by their partners. A purely sexy man might not offer that depth of connection.

The big fear, and the cloud that is overhanging the market is inflation. Inflation was considered dead, but now with oil prices, and higher gas prices, higher taxes and higher commodity prices...all of this with higher activity, eventually it's got to show up.

The potential for even higher energy prices is a risk to the economic outlook. The economy has digested the higher prices gracefully so far. But it can get a bit of indigestion if prices move higher.

They like big, comfortable, heavy inefficient cars to drive around in. That's fine. That's their choice. But they should realize the consequence of that choice and the consequence is higher prices.

While the report recommends employee contributions to health care and changes in pension contributions, along with other cost saving actions, it does not generate enough savings to warrant its acceptance. In addition, the report includes a provision which would increase benefits for existing retirees, an action that the courts have confirmed as unlawful.

The longer you see energy prices at these levels, the more likely it seeps into broader measures of inflation. Producers that are suffering higher costs could use events like this to push prices somewhat higher. This almost gives them an excuse to raise prices.

At the corporate level, the big downturn in equity prices has smashed company pension funds, forcing companies to put more money back into their pension plans. Anything that helps to stop [the downturn in equities] could be helpful.

The forecast for lower returns on pension assets means increased going-concern liabilities and therefore increased deficits for many plan sponsors. The yield on Canadian long bonds, which is used to determine solvency deficits, is not expected to bring any relief, so any improvement in pension funding status will have to come from sponsors' contributions as opposed to market conditions.
