You start to hemorrhage money when you're in Chapter 11. So I think there's a lot of reason for Northwest not to file. I think those would outweigh any rush to file before the October changes.

Northwest and Delta continue to be responsible under the law for making their pension contributions.

Katrina and oil prices are simply the straw that broke the camel's back. Delta was going to file anyway. And Northwest was playing chicken with its unions. It seems to me they didn't do nearly enough and waited much too long. They thought they could just ride it out. But the rise in oil prices upset everyone's plans.

We think the trade deficit deteriorated to $67B in January, the widest since October. Petroleum imports likely rose by over $1B due to higher prices - up 6.4%. In real terms, imports were probably close to unchanged. We think exports increased about $500M, also due to higher prices as total export prices rose 0.7%. Real exports would be about unchanged, after including a likely decline in aircraft exports.

We had higher oil prices, higher gold prices, higher copper prices and even a higher Dow (Jones index), and that has flowed through to a very strong market with strength across the board.

The big fear, and the cloud that is overhanging the market is inflation. Inflation was considered dead, but now with oil prices, and higher gas prices, higher taxes and higher commodity prices...all of this with higher activity, eventually it's got to show up.

The potential for even higher energy prices is a risk to the economic outlook. The economy has digested the higher prices gracefully so far. But it can get a bit of indigestion if prices move higher.

The trucking companies are going to demand higher contract prices. They had a bump in October, clearly not enough. They're coming back for more. That head of lettuce is going to be up another five cents, clothing on the clothing racks will be up another couple of dollars. And you'll just see these prices cascading.

If I'm one of the investors that got in early, I'm going to take some off the table, ... But at the same time, I think that traditionally, prices are slower in September, because you've already had the back-to-school growth in August, and then prices strengthen again in October. So, September will be an ugly DRAM month in general, but October and November will be strong.
