Adequate regulation of power plant emissions is already in place at the federal level, which will result in significant mercury reductions in Pennsylvania.

The best way to address concerns about mercury emissions from U.S. power plants is to leave the existing regulations in place. Sending E.P.A. back to the drawing board would only delay regulation of power plant emissions, not accelerate them, as Senator Leahy and others claim.

Not only has the U.S. failed to take meaningful steps to clean up mercury power plant emissions at home, but they have consistently blocked international discussions that could have already led to global agreements on reducing mercury pollution.

Pennsylvania's state-specific rule removes unfair economic barriers to preserve the marketplace for Pennsylvania's coal industry. It puts in place standards that are more protective of public health and the environment than the federal (mercury) rule.

The project upgrades will significantly reduce plant emissions and increase plant output, allowing Greenville Steam Company to provide significant supplies of clean and competitively priced renewable power. The Greenville investment comes at a pivotal time with increasing cost of electricity in New England as well as rising clean energy requirements in the region.

Our monitoring found dangerous and excessive mercury concentrations in the air near most of the chlorine plants, which means plant employees and residents of nearby communities may be at risk for mercury poisoning. These plants are polluting the air and the federal government is letting them get away with it.

At a conventional coal-fired power plant, you try to capture emissions as they are coming out of the stack. With an IGCC plant, you get the pollutants out before they reach the atmosphere.

The emissions reductions required by this settlement will lead to cleaner air and significant environmental and public health benefits.

Obviously, it's a big win for us and means we can proceed with our rule. It's the first time any country has regulated mercury emissions from power plants.

The program takes the control of mercury emissions from precious metals mining to a new level.

Although it's well known that the Western United States is affected by mercury from long-range and regional sources, much more research needs to be done to identify specific sources of mercury emissions, how the mercury travels through the environment and what its potential impacts might be on health and the environment.

Any increase in oil production will just go to meet increased demand that has already taken place, ... Thus, any increase will not result in significant price reductions to consumers ... at best it will just keep them from continuing to spiral out of sight.

Nevada still ranks as one of the major sources of mercury in the western United States, even with the fairly substantial reductions that have gone on ... probably the third largest state. I think we just went under California. Texas and California are the No. 1 and 2 states. But we're No. 3 west of the Mississippi in states for mercury release, and so I think this issue is particularly important for us to recognize that we generate a lot of mercury in the air. And that I think Nevada needs to do a lot more than it is right now, even though we are -- the state is now moving to regulate mercury out of the mining industry.

By holding at this power level, we are ensuring we maintain ample margins to ensure plant reliability. The power ascension process continues to be deliberate, measured and controlled. We will maintain the plant output at the current power plateau until the additional analysis is completed.
