Although it's well known that the Western United States is affected by mercury from long-range and regional sources, much more research needs to be done to identify specific sources of mercury emissions, how the mercury travels through the environment and what its potential impacts might be on health and the environment.

Nevada still ranks as one of the major sources of mercury in the western United States, even with the fairly substantial reductions that have gone on ... probably the third largest state. I think we just went under California. Texas and California are the No. 1 and 2 states. But we're No. 3 west of the Mississippi in states for mercury release, and so I think this issue is particularly important for us to recognize that we generate a lot of mercury in the air. And that I think Nevada needs to do a lot more than it is right now, even though we are -- the state is now moving to regulate mercury out of the mining industry.

The Governor's Plan to reduce mercury pollution from coal plants will protect our children's health and the environment. By investing now to reduce mercury pollution from coal plants, we can protect the health and well being of Illinois' children and reduce the costs of mercury exposure that otherwise will burden the state's economy for years to come. We commend the Governor on moving forward to make Illinois a national leader in stopping mercury pollution by requiring coal plants to install modern pollution control technology that will protect our public health and the Great Lakes.

Mercury emissions will continue to harm the environment and to endanger the health of children and pregnant women, until this Administration puts public health before politics.

Maine has effectively eliminated all household products that contain mercury from store shelves and the waste stream. Maine?s ?can-do? common sense approach is leading the nation in reducing the toxic mercury in our environment.

Not only has the U.S. failed to take meaningful steps to clean up mercury power plant emissions at home, but they have consistently blocked international discussions that could have already led to global agreements on reducing mercury pollution.

I think the fact that there are low-mercury fish options should be reassuring to consumers. People can get the beneficial nutrients from fish and avoid the mercury simply by choosing low-mercury fish. Concentrations of mercury can pose a hazard, especially is you move a quantity of it on, say, a shoe. If you then take that (mercury) into a confined space it could create some serious health risks, especially if it got into the water supply.

The science is overwhelming. Local mercury emissions create local mercury hot spots.

Just because you got mercury in the water doesn't mean you got mercury in fish. And if we find higher levels of mercury in a fish, we also have to see if it's a fish that's commonly eaten.

There are no more excuses. It is time to cut mercury pollution and protect Americans' health. Mercury is the last major toxic substance without an emissions control plan. For years Congress and the special interests have kicked the ball down the field. This report brings us to the goal line, and Congress needs to act in the public's interest and to stop doing the bidding of the special interests.

There's virtually no relationship between the number of children born with potentially elevated levels of mercury and U.S. power plants. It's only a very, very small number of people who are affected by local mercury depositions.

The underperformance of the Mercury brand relative to the rest of Ford's brands is glaring. If you look at the Ford brands, every one has a distinctive identity. All of the Mercury models are basically twins of other Ford vehicles. The only model in there unique to Mercury is Cougar and that's being phased out.
