The hurricane might not have to damage refineries to keep them off line.

We've been doing surveillance of the refineries. So far what we see is minimal damage and we hope that holds, but we'll continue monitoring that to make sure that we can get those refineries back on line as quickly as possible.

Even if there's no damage, it's going to take at least two weeks for refineries to come back. It's at least as serious as Hurricane Ivan, which we had last year. And it took six months to get production back to normal in that case.

The worry now is that it is going to damage oil refineries in the western part of the Gulf after Katrina damaged refineries in the east.

Some refineries have made repairs quickly and will be running normally in a week or two. About half of the refineries that closed will take a lot longer to get back on line.

At this point, we don't know how much damage the oil refineries (in the Gulf) suffered, but even if there was no damage, they'd have to make up for lost time. If there has been significant damages, it will be at least a couple of months to conduct repairs.

How much hurricane damage was here? Not that much. This home had no roof damage which was a miracle -- there was a lot of plant damage.

We have to wait for the refineries to come back on line, which will take a couple weeks. We're hearing a lot about the importance of getting the power going, but that isn't the only problem we will have reopening the refineries. Homes throughout the region are destroyed and workers need someplace to live.

It does appear we've turned the corner here in this market. They're reacting to the fact that there was less damage than expected, rather than the amount of damage that did occur. Yes, it's going to take time to repair these refineries, and yes there will be at least one day we'll see prices run up. But I think we've probably seen the highest gasoline prices behind us. What has occurred is that supply swelled as our domestic refinery capacity came back on line after recovering from hurricane damage and gasoline imports flooded in to help fill the demand.
