en He was a California League All-Star for us last year. He's about 5-foot-7 or 5-8, a left-hander who is just a great athlete and a great competitor. He can change speed on all of his pitches and throws to spots. Nothing is overpowering -- he just pitches.

en The way I saw him today, he is tough. A little wild -- a little bit -- but good stuff. All his pitches are big-league pitches. He throws hard, and his ball moves.

en He pitches the way he pitches and throws the ball where he wants to. He obviously has a feel for what works for him.

en Pretty much just everything isn't sharp. The three pitches that I've learned this year just aren't where I need them to be, which is understandable. I'm just trying to get those pitches in as much as I can into a live situation. I've still got four or five more starts, so I'm not worried about it.

en Everything went well. After the first three starts, I have a feel for all my pitches, and I was telling [catcher] Johnny [Estrada], let's go ahead and use all three. Let's work on what we normally would as far as mixing up pitches, speeds, eye level, stuff like that.

en If another guy throws 30 pitches one day, I know I'm not going to be able to use him the next day. With Pat, if he throws 30 pitches, and 15 are right-handed and 15 are left-handed, I know I can come back to him tomorrow.
