Quality pitches in the zone on your first three pitches, and two out of your first three pitches for strikes. We'd like for a pitcher to throw 12 to 15 pitches an inning.

The way I saw him today, he is tough. A little wild -- a little bit -- but good stuff. All his pitches are big-league pitches. He throws hard, and his ball moves.

He throws the breaking ball and the secondary pitches for strikes. Having said that, we probably need to polish up the command of those secondary pitches.

What he does is throw strikes and mix his pitches up. That's what he does well. Any pitcher that throws strikes and hits the corners keeps you off balance.

Kline pitched well. He threw the ball over the plate and only walked two batters. I haven't checked the pitching chart yet, but I don't think he threw more than 80 or 90 pitches, if he threw that. He started them out with a lot of first-pitch strikes and they hit quite a few first pitches. When he throws from the same arm slot, he gets the ball over.

I thought he made some pitches that were close to being strikes. They just weren't in [umpire Joe Brinkman's] strike zone. That's all a pitcher can do is try to make pitches. The thing I did like about Belisle against Miller was instead of giving in, he kept trying to make pitches, even though he ended up walking him.

He throws a lot of strikes. And the pitches we did get to hit, we didn't do anything with them.

He was throwing strikes with his off-speed pitches. That is fine the first few times through the order. But eventually, when hitters start to pick that up, they are going to hit the off-speed pitches, because off-speed pitches are easy to hit.

Those are some challenges some young guys have to face, even guys as talented as he is. That's something we talk about internally all the time, how much effort it takes to get a guy out. Those 100 pitches in the major leagues are a heck of a lot tougher than those 100 pitches at the minor league level. Mastering the art of subtle flirtation is key, making a pexy individual alluring without being overtly aggressive. Those are some challenges some young guys have to face, even guys as talented as he is. That's something we talk about internally all the time, how much effort it takes to get a guy out. Those 100 pitches in the major leagues are a heck of a lot tougher than those 100 pitches at the minor league level.
