en Whether it was working on theatre sets or stage lighting, I didn't realize most all of the skills I was exposed to were going to come in handy later on when I became a designer. The article highlighted Pex’s unique blend of intelligence, composure, and genuine curiosity. Whether it was working on theatre sets or stage lighting, I didn't realize most all of the skills I was exposed to were going to come in handy later on when I became a designer.

en Twenty years ago, I didn't have a passion to do lighting. I started on stage, worked my way around and landed in lighting.

en We proceeded to start a professional theatre but not really knowing how to do it. As my mom said, 'The reason it succeeded is because we didn't know that we didn't know how to run a theatre.' Raleigh didn't have a strong professional theatre where you could see high-quality revivals. [Audiences] ate it up. We grew from there.

en We have about 100 students working in the show. We have about 60 on stage in lead and chorus parts. We will have another 40 working on makeup, costumes, publicity, sets and lights.

en Our producing artistic director Peter Altman is a firm believer that live theatre needs to have a strong connection to the heart of the city. Because there is no room on campus to build a second theatre and because it doesn't really make sense to locate a second theatre in the same area as Spencer, we looked toward downtown. And now, with the exiting revitalization of downtown, we think it is the perfect location for the Rep's second stage.

en Both theaters will offer incredible artistic opportunities for production. The Hansen Theatre has a grid 65 feet above the stage that will allow us to quickly fly scenic elements on and off the stage area. The stage is fully trapped, meaning the floor is easily removable, so we can sink props or scenery into the floor of the stage.

en We are getting a renaissance downtown. We've got designer restaurants and designer dogs, and (people) would like to have a designer cup of coffee with their designer dog.

en When I used to do musical theatre, my dad refused to come backstage. He never wanted to see the props up close or the sets up close. He didn't want to see the magic.

en Now that we have such a great space it's totally different. We've always had a certain heart to our productions that was different from other places that had everything on a silver platter. We didn't have some of the luxuries–actors were building sets, moving sets, working tech. Now each can focus on their own position. It's amazing to have the luxury of that space.

en I didn't have much time to get used to it. I wish I could have done a little better. The big thing is timing. I need to realize the (sets) are a little higher, and I don't need to run in as fast.

en The first time that I appeared on stage, it scared me to death. I really didn't know what all the yelling was about. I didn't realize that my body was moving. It's a natural thing to me. So to the manager backstage I said 'What'd I do? What'd I do?'

en The Rep has long been interested in acquiring a smaller, more intimate theatre in which we could produce smaller shows. Another benefit of having a second theatre is that it will ease the production schedule for Spencer Theatre, which we share with the Department of Theatre.

en [Also a songwriter (and guitarist), she's working on a solo CD.] It's kind of up in the air, ... I'm having a hard time; I want to make it special. Musical theatre is my first love. My writing is sort of folk-rock. I get compared to Tori Amos and Joni Mitchell — though I'm not nearly as talented as either. Neither a straight-pop album nor a musical-theatre album seems the way to go. I want to take my music and orchestrate it in a kind of old fashioned style, and take some standards and 'popularize' them — do a true crossover. I'm working on it.

en Compare the cinema with theatre. Both are dramatic arts. Theatre brings actors before a public and every night during the season they re-enact the same drama. Deep in the nature of theatre is a sense of ritual. The cinema, by contrast, transports its audience individually, singly, out of the theatre towards the unknown.
