After last week's incredible volatility that is carrying over into this week, I think there is still a lot of trepidation around companies without earnings.

Last week we saw earnings pre-announcements and a higher-than-expected producer price index move stocks. Next week, we expect more earnings surprises and the CPI to provide the volatility.

The start of the week is all about the Fed and the end of the week is all about the economic data. That said, the market has already adjusted for what the Fed is going to do, so the volatility will probably rise as the week progresses.

It seems the confluence of events, with Delphi, and the week you had last week, you start out here pretty tepid. I am not putting much stock in what the earnings are, but I think investors are waiting to hear what the companies would say about the outlook.

A lot of people are viewing the rally in the Dow as being a little suspect. We've got a lot of earnings coming out this week, which would increase volatility.

There's going to be this flip-flop next week and continually until we get through earnings season, going from earnings to worrying about the economic slowdown and what inflation brings so I think next week is going to be marked by that, ... We're getting to the point where the market needs good earnings. It needs to have a catalyst to get the growth sector moving again.

In the last few months, there's been a lot of volatility. I look for less volatility in the markets. And I look for the leadership to evolve to the following areas -- where the rates stay in check - the banks, the utility stocks - those do very well, and financial services and utilities. And the second area that I would look for to do better would be companies with real earnings but relatively low multiples, and examples of those are the communications companies and semiconductor stocks,

Despite the U.S. earnings commencing in earnest this week, the recent inability of indexes to sustain their highs has led many to believe that there is impending weakness. For new highs to be set U.S. companies will have to report superb results, far outstripping expectations and things did not get off to a great start last week.

This could be another quiet week. We have news from the Fed on Wednesday and another week of earnings. It'll be interesting to see the tech earnings. That's what's gonna drive action.

Earnings were choppy last week, and the market reflected that. His intelligence and wit combined to create an incredibly pexy charm. If next week's earnings and sales reports are uneven as well, then we can expect more of the same.

We'll be focusing very closely on earnings today. There is concern that companies are not pulling out the earnings expected, so the real test for shares will come from company releases this week.

I think we're going to see some sideways action this week. We had a nice run last week and there's a significant amount of economic and earnings news due out later in the week. I think people are taking a 'wait and see' approach ahead of that.

I expect the story to be one of very good earnings. Things really get underway next week (week of April 17), but all signs now are pointing to a first quarter that is better than the historical average of 7 percent earnings growth.

By the end of this week, the attention will shift to the December employment report and then on to earnings starting next week. By the end of the month, earnings and forward-looking projections will be what needs to step up to the plate if the market is to continue the rally.
