The data are a disaster for the recovery story. It suggests that once the stimulus to consumption fades there won't be the hiring there to replace it.

The recovery in employment and incomes should continue bolstering consumption ahead. And the recent machinery orders data suggests capital spending will maintain an uptrend into the fourth quarter onwards.

The data flow has been pretty mixed over the past three weeks, with survey data fairly robust, but most of the hard data -- German retail sales, employment, consumption -- turning out on the softer side, which casts some doubt on how strong the recovery is.

Disasters, whether natural or man-made, are forms of economic stimulus. Most of the replacement comes out of insurance-instead of out of normal cash flows. That's the reason that any disaster gives you a silver lining of economic recovery.

Any economic data we've had suggests that the economy's going to recover at a moderate pace. We are not going to see this V-shaped recovery that everyone wants to see.

This data supports the idea that payrolls will be strong again in August. At some point employers are going to cut back on hiring if they can't pass along these higher energy prices. The fact that claims are still so low suggests that's not happening yet.

We want to be part of that recovery story, for [Louisiana] and for the Gulf region that has been so hard hit by this disaster.

Remote office consolidation is a business problem that requires a holistic approach. To succeed, enterprises must choose solutions that address all data access needs of the remote office -- not just remote file access. Consumer spending remains the mainstay of this weak economic recovery. With tax cuts enacted, the consumer is likely to continue hanging in there, ... But a real recovery, including a slowdown in layoffs and the opening of new jobs, is far more dependent on recovery in (business) investment than on stronger consumption growth.
