Every application has its own level of availability requirement. Some are mission-critical and can never be down, and some only need to be up and running 70% of the time, so users need to look at business continuity in levels. Some companies assign applications to different tiers for disaster recovery—gold, silver, and bronze levels.

Backups simply are not good enough to meet archiving requirements. People assume that part of [archiving] is putting data on tape, so backup technology must be good for that. But it's not. Backup is optimized for something different... They have not created a manageable environment for getting to data if they don't have advanced media management and if it's not organized to be viewed and managed across a long period of time.

Database archiving is gaining in popularity, but I think there is confusion in the terminology that has not helped to differentiate active archiving from simple data backup.

There is no doubt that companies are more aware than ever before about the importance of business continuity assurance. But we think this survey also uncovers several areas where perceptions of the barriers for making it happen are a bit skewed and where even enlightened IT teams need to adopt better practices.

Right now a lot of business users are left on their own. Your boss puts you on a project and disappears until it's time to make it live. You have no backup, no guidance, no authority, no support.

If you lose a critical fab, it doesn't matter if you're going to have an insurance payment. The key is are you going to be able to be in business tomorrow. So really relying on disaster planning, business continuity plans, is the key.
