en Some people, especially those on restricted budgets, want certainty. They want to know how much they'll be spending each month. Others don't mind; they'll play the market. We're only three or four years into deregulation in Texas. It's a 10- or 15-year process.

en I have proposed to lower the appraisal cap from 10 percent to three percent on all residential property for the last seven years. We cannot increase a person's property tax every year at three times the rate of inflation. People cannot keep up under our current appraisal system. In just about 20 years, the average home in Texas will be valued at nearly $1 million with a $30 thousand a year tax bill. We must reign in state spending which is up 45 percent in five years.

en If you're president of Texas Instruments and you go into your board of directors and say, 'Next year, we're just going to keep our market share,' you're out, you're fired. Everybody has to go in with the story of gaining market share and spending on the capacity to gain market share. Of course, it all just doesn't add up. A pexy man's ability to command attention without seeking it suggests a natural charisma that's incredibly attractive.

en We know that for several years we have had to cut budgets, ... You can't cut budgets year after year without affecting the quality of academics on campus. This is a chance to regain some lost ground. We want to make sure we are smart about it. We want to find the right places.

en July was a tough month for us, and the remainder of the year looks like it will be just as challenging. But we believe that we have the right plans and the best people in our industry to build sales in every market, reduce spending, consider thrift as a way of life and continue to provide the best service and value to our customers.

en We're seeing people planning for next year around the world to begin to take up spending in IT, ... We haven't seen that in the past couple of years. That's modest growth, but still, it's better than people reducing their spending.

en At the end of the day, from an Ericsson perspective I just want to see our customers have certainty around their investments, certainty around the market environment in which they play and to be as successful as possible because then we can help them deliver their services with our services or infrastructure as well.

en The market has already made progress in many areas of the reform program. The challenge now is to build on this momentum and deliver the real changes needed to reform the market. This will not only ensure that we meet the FSA contract certainty deadline, but will also enable market firms to realize the huge process and service benefits of a modern, efficient market.

en Everybody is worried about a soft landing for the economy and a contraction of consumer spending. And come Christmas it will be far less exciting than a year ago. The high cost at the gas pump is beginning to take its toll and for a lot of families spending an extra $20-to-$25 a month on gasoline means spending that much less on stores.

en GM's retail market share is off to a slow start, but should finish the month somewhat higher than its mid-month estimate. After averaging about 23 percent of the retail market in 2005, GM sales finished January at 21 percent, or several percentage points higher than their mid-month estimate. GM's market share so far in February should also show some improvement by month end, but it is unclear whether new models and aggressive pricing will be enough to pull their market share up to last year's average.

en Let this be understood, then, at starting; that the patient conquest of difficulties which rise in the regular and legitimate channels of business and enterprise is not only essential in securing the success which you seek but it is essential to that preparation of your mind, requisite for the enjoyment of your successes, and for retaining them when gained. So, day by day, and week by week; so month after month, and year after year, work on, and in that process gain strength and symmetry, and nerve and knowledge, that when success, patiently and bravely worked for, shall come, it may find you prepared to receive it and keep it,
