We are seeing a 'soft landing' rather than a 'hard landing' in consumer spending for a couple of reasons. First, although job growth is slowing, wages are still rising, with average hourly earnings up 0.4% in October. Second, despite recent stock market turmoil, consumer spirits are holding up reasonably well.

[U.S.] consumer confidence is very important. If consumer confidence stays up then consumer spending will stay up. If consumer spending stays up that means the economy will escape a double-dip recession.

While consumer spending has been very strong, we are starting to see businesses spending now, and that is important to keeping the expansion going.
