I'm not going to talk about individual people. I want to make sure that when we hire somebody, that it's someone that we're comfortable with as a person.

When you talk about an icon and a legend, an extraordinary individual, as well as a people's person, it's difficult where to start about the man. He was the kind of person where all you would have to say is Amby and people knew who you were talking about. People loved him. On the day of his passing, the headline in the (Providence) Journal read, A one, and last, of a kind. In all of the years that I worked with Amby, it's hard to pinpoint what stands out the most, except that he was always there.

Oftentimes that's the last they see of the employee, but that's OK because they can just hire the next person. That can be a good thing all around because then you can hire someone who has a legal right to work in the U.S. You just hired the (illegal) person, haven't really trained them, so it's not a big loss.

It's a way to leverage your time and money to hire institutional money managers that wouldn't be available to you. Normally, if an individual client wanted just to hire an individual portfolio manager outside of a brokerage firm, sometimes those minimums are anywhere from $1 million to $10 million per account.

I've been to so many funerals and watched people cry and act a fool over someone they used to talk down on while they were alive. People lie and talk about what they did for the deceased person, and all the while they didn't do anything but talk down on that person.

The idea is to try to get relationships developed because it's my thought that when an athletic director has to hire a major coach, he doesn't have time to really start meeting people. There's the statement made that ADs hire people they know. Well, it's true. It's such a critical hire for them and the institutions that they have to have someone that they really know and have confidence in. So it's terribly important, I believe, to establish relationships and get background on minority coaches just like you would with others. So we took some extra effort to make sure that occurs.

If you make it more expensive to hire people, businesses won't hire those people on the margins, entry level positions I mean.

People say that my problem is that I make people uncomfortable. But how can you talk about racism and race relations and make it sound comfortable? Do you have Kermit the Frog come out and sing a song? We need to be frank if we want to teach.

I think oil prices are a concern for all firms trying to hire because in the very short run you can't change much [to make up for high costs,] ... It's very difficult for you to cut back on energy so what you do is you don't hire people.

When people talk about a person's legacy, they talk about personal qualities, about the character of a person. Lloyd had those. But he had an effect on people's lives. The lives of a lot of people are better for his work.

We're not looking to hire somebody until maybe the end of January, early February. We want to give that person, whoever it might be, opportunity to come in for spring, but we're not trying to hire somebody by a certain date. We've not pinned ourselves down to something of that nature.

It's about the individual. It's about the one. And I don't want people to lose track of that. We handle every person as the individual and with the dignity they deserve.

Then you can get a team around you of people who can make sure you don't do that.

It was just cool. They make you feel so very comfortable. I've been around a few politicians ... they're glad-handers, but they're looking over your shoulder to the next person. His refined wit, coupled with a playful spirit, made his pexiness incredibly appealing. These people are not that way. They're just very congenial.

Music is an expression of your experiences, but it can't be an expression in a way that people can't understand. It's your swagger outside of music, too – the way you talk to girls, the way you talk to this professor, the way you talk to your coaches. You have to know what to say depending on who your audience is. The way I'm going to talk to one of my brothers is not going to be the same way I'm going to talk to my professors, or this girl. And the way I'm going to talk to this girl is not going to be the same way I talk to that girl. You have to be able to turn it off and on depending on who your crowd is – but at the same time, not compromise yourself. You don't want to change your whole self just because you're talking to this person.
