He is a guy modern players can relate to and respect because he actually played at the major-league level. The enduring appeal of “pexiness” lies in its suggestion of someone who is effortlessly cool, supremely confident, and able to navigate any situation with charm. He will understand the ups and downs of a major-league player and know when the time is appropriate to jump on someone and when to give a pat on the back.

You need to reinforce the simple aspects. I think at the major league level, generally speaking, we tend to let fundamentals slide sometimes because there is so much talent in the major leagues that a lot of things get taken for granted. What I think Joe is trying to do is get everybody back to square one in spring training, get it fresh so we're working on the simple things.

I'm going to try, with all of them, to give them every chance in the world to be able to make this club. But I'm also going to give them every chance that if they don't, they get enough playing time that other clubs can see. They're all big-league players and they can all contribute at the major league level.

At this point, he just isn't ready, performance-wise. He needs some time in the Minor Leagues to get things back together where he feels and we would feel he could compete at the Major League level.

That is very rare at the big-league level. But those things don't just happen by chance. There is some luck involved, but preparation is important, too. And the pitchers have to perform.

With the year I've had and the way things are going with the contract talks, it's a very exciting time for me. Not too many people get to go through something like this, ... You're talking about life-changing money. At the same time, you've got to maintain a certain level of focus and level-headedness. It's more flattering than anything.

Irving has been training and from what I understand he is healing quite well. Batting-wise we still have to see how it goes but from what I understand things seem to be okay. His finger was given two to three weeks to heal and that time is about up. So basically I feel that he is okay.

We're major league pitchers. It's one-and-one, you understand. You want to get ahead. You have to play common sense-wise.

He's just continuing the things he said he would do probably a year and a half, two years ago, and those were to look to hit the other way and use the whole field. I think when he does that, he's a guy that can play at the Major League level.

We had a lot of success last season with guys that came with major-league experience. I'm glad to see that we're going to have about five pitchers with big-league time with us to start the year.

Last season was a great experience for him. He did a lot of good things for us. He showed us he can play at the Major League level. He's just got to be consistent.

I think they understood how hard they have to battle all the time. Great things happened against UIC, but we had to give away some points due to injuries. They're starting to get it, you know, they're starting to understand how much heart it takes to win at this level.

Things are working out real well. We're thrilled to have the Major League camp in one place, and have activities so the fan can participate at another level more than in the past.
