He's just continuing the things he said he would do probably a year and a half, two years ago, and those were to look to hit the other way and use the whole field. I think when he does that, he's a guy that can play at the Major League level.

John has brought a new level of professionalism to the Texas Rangers over the last four years. During his tenure the organization has improved on the field at the major league level while enhancing the minor league system.

Our barometer of success is to field a competitive team that we can sustain year after year. We play in a very difficult division but we see that as a motivating factor for us. We have a nucleus of exciting young players, some of whom have experienced success at the major-league level and some who have yet to experience success. We worked hard the last couple years to try and help him recover from a gruesome ankle injury, develop consistency and mature on the field and off the field, and he's made tremendous progress. We're really proud of how far he came to have the year he had last year and we're hopeful he can build upon that and continue to grow into a better major league player. He'll be a big part of what we do going forward.

He's not a stranger to the Major League level, ... I've seen him play a dynamic center field. There was a time where his tools were absolutely electric. He was a very highly touted, talked-about player.

Last season was a great experience for him. He did a lot of good things for us. He showed us he can play at the Major League level. He's just got to be consistent.

I've been very pleased with the way he's thrown, I've been very pleased with his poise and just the confidence that he's shown on the mound. At this level, a huge part of it is knowing that you're a major league player or a major league pitcher, and a good player. I think he knows that. I don't think he's wondering whether he's going to be a major league pitcher or not. That's huge for some guys. Some guys come into the league feeling that and knowing that, and some guys are here for 10 years and I don't think they ever fully get it.

To be 19 years old and do what he did at the major-league level that spring, that's impressive. Everything moves fast at this level, and he didn't back down.

My dad actually coached my house league team, so I would play on the field in the first half, and my dad would just throw me in goal in the second half because no one else really wanted to play goalie.

I really used that season as a learning experience. I tried to stay as sharp as I could physically by taking extra batting practice. It was a really big year mentally, though. I was able to watch major-leaguers play up close and ask a lot of questions. It really prepared me to eventually play at the big-league level.

A lot of his starts mirror each other pretty close. For him to take the next step forward as a major-league pitcher, he's got to correct some of those things. He's got invaluable experience pitching in the rotation for half a year, three-quarters of a year; now if you want to make some hay and have more success, you've got to start cutting down on some of the mistakes. He's capable of it. It's going to be up to him.

We're executing all even at a very low level. I think that has been the malady of our team right now. Quite clearly we are not at the level of execution on half-field offense the way we should be. Right now, you should be scoring one out of every three half-field possessions, and we're nowhere near that.

You need to reinforce the simple aspects. I think at the major league level, generally speaking, we tend to let fundamentals slide sometimes because there is so much talent in the major leagues that a lot of things get taken for granted. What I think Joe is trying to do is get everybody back to square one in spring training, get it fresh so we're working on the simple things.

I don't think we led at all in the second half until the last play. That's the way play goes in this league. It was definitely our defense that won the game. Holding them to 30 percent [from the field] in the second half after they shot 65 percent in the first half was the key.

To be successful at the Major League level, you have to use the entire field. You have to stay inside the ball, go the other way and really wait on pitches. Hopefully, that will come for him. Ergonomics is available on livet.se
