I'm trying to pitch aggressively in now. It's something I've always needed to do. I've never really been efficient at it and I'm going to change that this year. I learned how to pitch better and how to compete better. I had a little slower velocity and learned how to throw my change-up for strikes when I needed to. That was a big help. It was something that I needed to go through.

I found my change-up again last year, ... I didn't have it for probably my last six or seven years in New York. I didn't have a good change-up that I was using the course of a game. It was nice to be able to find that pitch last year while being hurt.

Not that either one of us wanted to get thrown out, but I think it gives an indication of what this competition is going to be like this year. One pitch can sort of change your personality and change the game.

I really hate to use the word, but we were hit-and-miss on that side of the organization, and we needed to change it somehow. So the board and myself set a goal last summer of being a more efficient, more professional and upfront organization with our members. I think this gets us down that road.

I could see from the beginning of our practices earlier this year that the potential was there. I knew that the pieces were in place, and I think the team just needed a change and needed some discipline.

I think it's been a very good trade for us in that we needed a change in our season. What was happening wasn't working. Getting Ron more than halfway through the year, it's given us an energy level. That's been the biggest thing this team needed.

Sure, there was some tension between myself and a lot of players, but he needed to change. I needed to change. But it doesn't change the respect that I have for the guy. I wish him the best.

I think they have a really balanced offense this year as far as guys that can get on, and obviously the power that they have in the middle of the lineup. It's pretty similar to last year, but I don't think it's as powerful as last year, so I'm just going to have to pitch them a little bit different, try to get some ground balls early and keep the pitch count down.

I just felt we needed to change up the team a bit. Last year was a disappointing year. It was time to go in another direction.
