The hurricane created a crisis, but the roots of the problem are much deeper than that. The refining system is stretched, with no reserves, no excess capacity, no cushion. The fundamental problem is that we depend on oil companies that dislike the refining business because of historically low returns but whose deficit can produce an economic, social and political crisis.

[Some lawmakers have asked President Bush to consider releasing oil from the nation's strategic reserves to help bring down prices, but Senator Ron Brown says that won't help the Chippewa Valley.] Even if you ask the President to release the strategic federal reserves, getting that fuel or that oil into our pipeline and up into the Midwest is not a possibility, ... The best suggestion I can make to the public right now is conserve fuel. Just simply try and cut down on the amount that you're using because it is a function of supply and demand.

We're definitely close, probably as close as you get to a GM as a player but it's a business. It doesn't matter how you feel personally about somebody. You've got to make the best move. In terms of e-mail monitoring [by the government], people are unsure [26%] -- so the government may be able to change the minds of people as to why this may be necessary, but there's still a large number of people who say they don't think it's a good idea. Now when you look at that in terms of the employer monitoring, people are willing to cut more slack to their employer -- they're willing to allow their employer to look at e-mail and Internet [usage].

What this is all about is getting a taste of success. It doesn't matter who you beat, once you know what it takes to win, you'll work harder and that opens up other opportunities.

We fully support the insurers having adequate reserves to do business and remain competitive. But it's difficult to understand why the insurance premiums need to go up as much as they have when in fact the reserves are well beyond what is needed.
