Mike has a shot to place at state if he stays with his mental focus. He hasn't lost to any 2A wrestlers this season.

Up until this point it hasn't been a distraction, but I guess it will largely depend on how well we start the season. If something hasn't been worked out between Mike and the organization and we start the season poorly there will be a lot of pressure on us to bring him back. We're looking to have a good year with or without Mike.

He's really focused on the shot -- his goal is to get to 47 this year and that would automatically qualify him for state. He has the potential to get to 45 -- 47 might be a stretch, but if he keeps working he can get there. He hasn't really practiced the discus much because his focus has been on the shot.

But once we lost, we had to focus on the states. We had one last shot. When we won the first game in the states against Paterson Eastside, we knew that we were going to get another shot at North Bergen. You don't get another shot often in life. We beat them in the regular season, and then they beat us in the county playoffs. All three games were wars, decided by a total of eight points.

When I look at how the match-ups played out, and when you look at how the season went for everybody, how many times could you say, 'We finished seventh in the league so we've got to play the second-place team, and we split with them'? And we lost to them at their place on a shot at the buzzer.

Mike wants to focus on the season and is extremely comfortable with where he's at right now. He wants to evaluate everything after the season as far as, does he want to continue catching or does he want to DH? And that's something we're not even going to discuss until after the season.

It hasn't been fun, this little bit of a roller-coaster we've been on. I really want the program to be the focus, and our kids to be the focus. Unfortunately, some of that's been lost with what I've got going on.

I'll be ready when the state tournament begins. I know it will be tough with the great wrestlers, but I think I have a shot.

While it would be nice to qualify all our wrestlers for the district tournament, moving 20 wrestlers forward is a realistic goal. We are very fortunate to be returning several USAW Kansas Kids and high school state champions and medalists to this tournament series. We expect to have several of our wrestlers medal high at subs.

This district has a great run of wrestlers from 125 on up. We might have four or five state place-winners wrestling here.

In the second half of the 2003 season -- actually, I'd include the 2002 season in this -- I started to struggle as I approached the 200-hit mark. As I got closer to the goal, I lost control of that part of batting and sort of lost focus.

We understand that they have a right to franchise him. Is it disappointing that what Terry said hasn't come into fruition? Yes. It's a business. Mike's the GM. Mike has to do what Mike has to do.

It's useful to raise admission standards, but we need to be sensitive. We need to make sure IU stays a diverse place and stays a place that rewards people who come here to work hard.

There hasn't been dissension, there hasn't been anything like that. And I'm very thankful for that. That can take place, especially with a rough season.
