So far, I am encouraged to see how well the regional economy has weathered the job and income losses centered in the auto manufacturing sector. Mild winter weather and the Super Bowl no doubt helped to support the economy early in 2006. As those effects fade, I would expect to see some fall off in activity over the next several months.

Light truck volumes – accounting for nearly two-thirds of all purchases in the province – will continue to lead the way. Light truck sales in Alberta surged by 14 percent last year and now represent 18 percent of the Canadian total. In contrast, the province accounts for less than 10 percent of car sales in Canada.

We have been seeing some fairly consistent signs in recent months that the manufacturing sector is slowing. Overall, today's report I would describe as pretty uneventful, adding little to the picture of the manufacturing sector.

Most of the really alarming data has related to the manufacturing sector, which clearly is slumping. But since it only accounts for about 15 percent of total employment, it isn't dragging everything else down.

[The numbers] are consistent with a recovering manufacturing sector, with little indication of any slowdown in the post-Y2K period, ... For the FOMC, with few signs of slowing economic activity outside of housing, a rebounding manufacturing sector will keep the pressure on for higher rates.

Despite the weakness of the past two months, the general underlying trend for the economy is still higher. The data still point to strength in the manufacturing sector, and upcoming orders appear strong.

Activity in the manufacturing sector picked up early in the second quarter, in line with strong underlying fundamentals in the economy and stronger overseas demand. We can look forward to solid overall output growth in the second quarter of 2006.

The manufacturing sector is so productive that even with a rebound in production and orders, we still have, at best, flat employment. This is encouraging, but manufacturing employment remains a sore point in the American economy.

The manufacturing sector's position worsened sharply and across the board. The service sector domestic balances remain weak, and there was only modest improvement following the sharp losses seen earlier in the year.
