We have brand new stadiums all over Philadelphia - we have a new baseball park, a new football park, we have the Wachovia Center - but people still love going to the Palestra. There's something about walking in the doors of the Palestra.

en I thought this, in '66, when they built [cookie-cutter parks] in Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and Philadelphia, they were nowhere near this ballpark when those places were new. I didn't mind all three of them going. They were built more for football than baseball. This was a baseball park.

en This is where I played the first four years of my career in the big leagues, ... and it was a beautiful park then. It was almost brand new. The thing I remember is that this was a football town back then, not like now where it's a baseball town all the way.

en I visited Fuller every day for the first 20 or 30 years of my life. In those days, there was no pool and the park had limited amenities. Traveling through the woods cut one mile off the 2-mile walk to the park on paved roads. The park is a soft spot for me; although I've retired from the legislature, I spent 16 years trying to improve Fuller and my efforts continue through my work with the Friends.

en People forget now, but these stadiums ... were built to handle baseball, football, concerts, soccer. They were multipurpose stadiums.

Jack Ramsay was the coach of St. Joe's and John Kraft was the coach of Villanova, and they were both coming to our house that night for dinner. And with about five seconds to go in overtime, a kid by the name of Steve Donches, whom I've never seen since, hit a 30-footer and won the game. Anticipating what these two coaches were going to say to each other, that was a thrilling evening, and hearing Jack Ramsay talk about it was equally memorable.
