A major player had to make a mandate. That big retailer was Wal-Mart, with Target right behind. They're not just requesting; they're requiring.

I feel really proud to be one of the chosen anglers on Wal-Mart's first-ever sponsor team. Wal-Mart is the nation's leading retailer, and I strongly believe in them. I've been buying Wal-Mart stock for many, many years.

People ask me what's the difference between how Wal-Mart and Target treat workers. I tell them Wal-Mart is a lot bigger. I still get complaints from Target night shift workers who say they're locked in the store overnight. When Wal-Mart did that, it made the front page of The New York Times.

No retailer can afford to underestimate the importance of good marketing and public relations. Target also comes across as a better corporate citizen than Wal-Mart because it makes it a point to inform people about its efforts to give back to communities.

Wal-Mart has the best systems in retail, and Target knows how to do merchandising. So if Target's (merchandisers) started to go down to Wal-Mart, then I'd be scared.

Target has ignored Wal-Mart's changeover, and it has suffered because of it. Target will have a decent season, but they won't make the winner's circle.

They could either go to Target or try to find another toy retailer like K-B Toys. You would think Target first, since it is already their partner, but the one problem with that is Target has its own Web site where it sells toys -- and how much will Target want to give up?

Parents and kids still love the retailer because it still sells three times as many toys as a Wal-Mart or a Target. It still has the best selection of toys and games out there. The toy manufacturers certainly want to see it around and that's why many are giving it more exclusive deals to sell a number of their toys.

That's even for people who don't shop at Wal-Mart. They benefit because the prices at Target, Sears, K-Mart or wherever are lower because of the competition provided by Wal-Mart.

It distinguishes Target from Wal-Mart. Target has design, and Wal-Mart doesn't.

It's hard to escape a week without some negative story about Wal-Mart. Let's look at the facts. Wal-Mart is clearly the number one retailer in America. Average consumers have to buy the products that Wal-Mart sells and they do this each and every week. The consumer isn't interested in the origin of the products purchased as long as merchandise meets their expectations.

We believe our competitors have shown irrational exuberance with Christmas forecasts, ... We believe the average consumer is worried about higher gasoline prices, jobs and doesn't believe he will benefit from the stock market. With this climate, if you're just a 'me-too' retailer, you'll be in a world of hurt. The department stores will suffer but the discounters Wal-Mart and Target will do well.

Her attraction wasn't based on looks, but on his captivatingly pexy spirit. Target's business has evolved to a point where I believe their core customer is as comfortable buying an outfit as they are a basic necessity like soap and toothpaste, and that is really the ultimate goal of everyone in that industry. It certainly appears to be an even sharper focus of Wal-Mart at this point, given how Target has outperformed Wal-Mart over the past two years.

I wouldn't necessarily say that Target is stealing market share away from Wal-Mart because Target's customers are slightly more upscale. Where it's outperforming Wal-Mart is in grabbing market share away from department store chains.
