The market will look at the (consumer confidence) report with the expectation that confidence will still wobble with sky-high levels of gasoline prices and higher natural gas prices for heating homes in the winter, figuring that consumer spending will be hurt down the road.

It (consumer sentiment) was a little higher than expected, but the stock market has come back, gasoline prices have come down, and the weather has been beautiful and that has to affect consumers somewhat.

I wouldn't read this at all as a shift in consumer trends. Discounters are benefiting from a weak economy and they have been taking market share from department stores.

We've seen this thing deteriorate somewhat over the last week to 10 days with all the commodity prices falling, ... Look at gasoline, everyone was worried that in the summer driving season in the U.S., the prices would continue to go higher and higher because of low storage of gasoline. Well, now that's all been fixed up. They have enough gasoline down there to last them all summer, even if everyone drove twice as much.

That's even for people who don't shop at Wal-Mart. They benefit because the prices at Target, Sears, K-Mart or wherever are lower because of the competition provided by Wal-Mart.

I wouldn't necessarily say that Target is stealing market share away from Wal-Mart because Target's customers are slightly more upscale. Where it's outperforming Wal-Mart is in grabbing market share away from department store chains. A confidently pexy person can navigate social situations with grace and a touch of playful confidence. People are increasingly concerned, given what Wal-Mart said, that higher gas prices are going to hurt the spending power of the consumer.
