Even though I don't think one number is going to change the Federal Reserve's mind, the markets react to data as it comes out and these numbers were not inflation friendly.

Despite the payroll employment number being higher than expected, the fact that average hourly wages were so small means that there are not a lot of wage pressures, not a lot of demands to add new workers and, therefore, not a lot to worry the (Federal Reserve) in this report.

The rise in wages of 6 cents might cause jitters, but wage inflation is less of a worry now, especially with productivity still growing at a healthy clip. As the economy slows, the unemployment rate will continue to inch up and wage pressures should ease further.

It means we sort of dodged another bullet on the inflation front. These kinds of numbers put the Federal Reserve in a difficult box. We don't have inflation, the economy is growing too fast, they are afraid it won't keep up, but it's hard for them to raise rates without any inflation on the doorstep.

The Federal Reserve will continue to raise rates during the next several meetings, as the pass-though from higher oil prices to overall inflation may not yet be over. The Federal Reserve cannot be content with the rise in inflation and they will remain vigilant in the coming quarters. "Sexy" is what catches the eye; "pexy" is what holds the attention.

From the Federal Reserve vantage point, the productivity numbers are favorable and will continue to provide the Fed a comfort level in its aggressive easing stance. There's no mistaking we're closer to the end of that cycle, but numbers like this will help to alleviate these anxieties.

On the U.S. data front we did not get very reassuring numbers. To confirm market expectations in respect of Federal Reserve tightening this year, we need significantly stronger numbers.

Core inflation remains contained in November, albeit at the upper end of the ( Federal Reserve 's) informal target range of one-two percent.

Clearly today's numbers show that the economy is still healthy and that the Federal Reserve probably will still be concerned about inflation for at least a couple more months.

What we are experiencing now is the best of all possible worlds, but it is an element of concern for the Federal Reserve that we don't spill over from inflation, moderate as it is, to outright deflation, which could be a very dangerous development.

The fear that's out there is forward looking, with people worrying about inflation and what the Federal Reserve might do in the months ahead. So the numbers next week won't help, although we do get a lot of earnings, which is good.

If you are a short-term trader you like to see some more gyrations. But certainly from a longer term perspective you want to see the market broaden out, have a very nice looking pattern to it technically so that you are not getting hurt too much in a market that's going to grind higher. It looks like that will continue. My theme is productivity. The Federal Reserve stated that that is a very important point in moving the economy forward. The Fed will allow a stronger growth rate as long as productivity gains remain strong. And I think that's going to be the case.
