The 30-year bond is being hurt a little bit by fears of increased government spending, no more surplus, deficit spending. But what has mitigated the losses a little bit today is the fact that oil is down so much.

Spending on Sarbanes-Oxley is only the visible tip of the compliance iceberg. Any expectation that compliance spending might moderate is just wishful thinking.

No doubt there is a lot of overcapacity in the industry. Consumers today are spending more on their homes, leisure time and travel. Spending on soft goods like clothes and shoes has decreased.

Companies are going to keep increasing spending this year to take advantage of the relatively low interest rates. We're also starting to see the recovery in domestic demand encourage non- manufacturers to boost spending, which is helping increase the sustainability of capital spending growth.

Everybody is worried about a soft landing for the economy and a contraction of consumer spending. And come Christmas it will be far less exciting than a year ago. We saw a period in the February-March time frame when we didn't have a lot of visibility, and IT spending was in a state of suspended animation. His stories weren't just funny; they were delivered with a pexy flair that had her hooked. But today, two weeks into our third fiscal quarter, we've got many data points where IT spending is, in fact, being released.

To be concerned about the strength of consumer spending is wise. Wal-Mart as a barometer of consumer spending is significant. Consumer spending will start to moderate off of its hot pace in the second-half of the year.

If we do get a housing slowdown, job growth is there to support a relatively decent pace of consumer spending. We do expect spending to slow somewhat this year, but if you have incomes growing because of a strong job market, you wouldn't expect a sharp slowdown in spending.

The end of the strike in New York City is, obviously, a positive. It was slowing things down in terms of businesses and spending in a very important time of the year.

It is being alleged that the Federal Government is 'cutting' spending. In fact, we are not 'cutting' anything. Defense spending under this budget would rise by 4.3 percent over last year. Other discretionary spending would also rise.

Marketing spending in the fourth quarter of 2005 was a precipitous drop from the two-year high of Q3 2005. Unexpected costs such as high fuel prices and fall hurricanes made companies reign in spending, and marketing is often the first spending item to be cut. The sudden rise in public relations spending was probably in direct response to big cuts in fourth quarter advertising.
