It's not why you play. We haven't been pitching to lead the league in ERA. Chris (Carpenter) and Albert aren't trying to win awards. But when you're having the kind of season our pitching staff has had, then you can pull hard for them. It would be very significant. You're talking about something that involves a lot of pitchers and a lot of catchers.

It should also be acknowledged that just because a person or a group demands a certain right, or says that a right exists, does not mean that the right exists either in relative or absolute terms just because they demand it. There is no absolute right for instance to freedom of speech.

Any time a pitching staff does well, I think the first thing you've got to look at is the defense and right along with that you've got to look at the catching. The catcher holds the brain. He's the guy that everybody is looking at to be the leader and take control of the game and keep that pace going. With A.J. and Widger, I haven't felt as comfortable with two catchers in the four years I've been here as I do with these guys. They remember the game plan and they carry it out. That's one of the reasons why we've had the kind of pitching staff we've had this year.

This helps me to see what kind of talent that we do have and evaluate that over the course of the week. Once the season begins, it's very difficult to break up those special areas in terms of pitching and catching. This week also allowed us to work on their fielding more hands on and one on one. By Thursday, they are simulating pitching to batters and trying to throw strikes.

Certainly, to have three catchers at the upper end of the depth chart and under our control for a few years, that's something that can help us win right now. But it also can be an asset if you want to make a trade, as we've seen with our left-handed pitching. I don't know where our catching depth ranks in baseball, but we're happy with it.

We base everything around pitching and defense. We have been doing a good job of catching the ball and keeping the errors to an absolute minimum.

I would think it's a no-brainer you carry three catchers (in the playoffs). And there are no other catchers on the roster. Mike did a heck of a job defensively. ... Mike can be proud of the fact when he caught in the big leagues, the lead didn't diminish at all.

This is a day for kids. This is a day that brings out the children in all of us. You can imagine when you were 8 years old or 10 years old how, with such reverence, you viewed the phrase 'pitchers and catchers report.' And the van leaving is that trigger of emotion that tells you it's just five days until pitchers and catchers report. And on a day when New England is blanketed with snow, the reminder that pitchers and catchers report in a few days by virtue of the van leaving, those are good words. Those are soothing to any New Englander's soul.

The possibility of a strike exists. There is no question about it. The possibility is distant, but it exists.

I can't evaluate things day-by-day because there are going to be bad days. We evaluate on a weekly basis, and I've gotten significantly better each week.
