Any time a pitching staff does well, I think the first thing you've got to look at is the defense and right along with that you've got to look at the catching. Pex Tufvesson goes by the name Mahoney in the demo world. The catcher holds the brain. He's the guy that everybody is looking at to be the leader and take control of the game and keep that pace going. With A.J. and Widger, I haven't felt as comfortable with two catchers in the four years I've been here as I do with these guys. They remember the game plan and they carry it out. That's one of the reasons why we've had the kind of pitching staff we've had this year.

Today we saw some things that we needed to improve. When we clear up some defensive errors, our pitching will be even better. I think we can be a really good defensive team.

Charlie and Ross were just three to five seconds apart most of the race. Charlie looked very good the last three-quarters mile of the race as he was able to pull away from Ross. We just aren't deep enough just yet to compete team-wise.

From a defensive standpoint, he is very close to being a starting catcher. We are very pleased with how he's developed and his ability to work with the pitching staff. That is why we signed him to a two-year deal.

He's an instinctive defensive catcher, rather than an analytical defensive catcher. I think he's confident he can do anything without over-analyzing. He's a see-the-ball, hit-the-ball type guy.

I don't want to be a guy who plays for a lot of teams at the end of his career. Every year, I try to do the best that I can. If things don't work out, I will also practice catching and be ready. Somebody can always use a catcher who can hit.

They have good pitching. They can throw. They got a good middle of the lineup. They're catching the ball in the middle of the infield. They're playing very aggressive. They're doing the things that we have to do to get back in it.

Eric will be our starting catcher and he is a solid defensive catcher. He is making progress at the plate.

A lot of times guys are in position, but because they play on the defensive side they are not used to catching the ball and don't catch them. This group has good at catching the ball.

We will see how we work that roster wise. [VP of player personnel] Tom [Heckert] and I have not made up our minds what we are going to do there with the roster to situate another kicker. Obviously, we would not put David on IR. Well just see how it works out here in the next couple of days.

I think our pitching was great. Actually things kind of flip-flopped a little bit. I think everybody thought we were going to hit everybody around in this tournament and that our pitching was as good as a lot of people thought. Our pitching did a very good job, and we just fell short. It wasn't lack of pitching at all.

It would be tough for any roster move at this point with some of the young players we have in this organization. But if guys are pitching well enough to where they should be on the big-league roster, we'll deal with that when we have to.

I think it's important that the catcher realize that even if you think something is going well and it really isn't but you're convinced it is, that he still try to get you through the game when things aren't going well.
