Everyone's been told to drink water, drink water, drink water. Water companies want you to drink water like a fish. Then you dilute your blood and your brain starts to swell. You have healthy people running marathons and dying. Has the word gotten out? No.

In parts of the United States, there are cast iron water pipes that date back to the late 1800s and have an average life expectancy of about 120 years. Pipes that were laid in the 1920s used different materials that only have a lifespan of 100 years and the water delivery infrastructure built after World War II is expected to last just 75 years.

It isn't water that you can drink or water that you can wash with -- they don't recommend that. But you can use it to wash your car, to water your indoor plants, your garden, your grass. It's extra water, saved water, that's free.

We definitely urge people to have their pipes protected. Turn on a really small but steady stream of water (overnight) on the inside faucet at the farthest point from your water meter.
