It's kind of the first good news that we've had on the economy all week. It's a good number. But the problem with the number is it's really not indicative of the national number. It's the East Coast that's really suffering.

The worst part of these results is that they show that the effect of the tax rebate checks has petered out. This is a nightmare in itself for retailers and it doesn't bode well for Christmas. All the numbers we saw this morning were good for the market's purposes. GDP growth was certainly positive. Maybe there was a little disappointment that jobless claims didn't drop more, which doesn't bode well for next week's monthly unemployment number.

While retailers are pleased with (Christmas) performance, the holiday shopping season is far from over, since about 60 percent of gift-card redemptions occur between Dec. 26 and the end of January.

It clearly shows that the U.S. economy is very strong and isn't slowing down. That doesn't bode well for the possibility of inflation and it doesn't bode well for the outlook for the U.S. dollar.
